Nutrition psychology, a sub-field to health psychology, which seeks to understand the relationship between nutritional behavior, mental health and general well-being, by applying an interdisciplinary approach to examine the influence of diet on mental health.
Here, I offer a series of lectures to people who are interested in expanding their knowledge about food and mental health. The lectures will mainly be held in Helsingfors, but if there's an audience big enough in another place, I will travel to that place to give the lectures. Language: English or Swedish, all depending on demands from the audience.
I'm a psychological scientist with a BA in experimental emotional psychology (psychophysiology or neuropsychology) from Uppsala university, MSc in social psychology from Mälardalens university, and a PhD in work and organizational psychology from Lund university. My work experience as a researcher and lecturer spans over several Nordic universities, e.g. Helsingfors, Gothenburg, and Uppsala. In Sweden, I was assigned to be an expert-lecturer at various university colleges. Between 2014-2018, I was also part of a research network at Karolinska Institute (KI), dealing with mental health issues from a social sustainability perspective. At the University of Helsingfors (2018-2022), I was assigned to explore the future of food production from a perspective of entrepreneurial thinking and to teach prospective thinking (Österberg, 2021). That included nutrition psychology (Österberg, 2023). Now I'm running Academic Competency, promoting health and entrepreneurial thinking among individuals and organizations.
Food plays an important role in a person's life. That's because food:
- contain a number of micro nutrients we need to sustain health.
- work as comfort or as a social glue.
Food is also very complex. Some say it's also very political. Because of that I will include decision models in the lectures, to help you think about how you think before, during, and after you make a decision.
During these lecture, I aim to orient the participant about nutrition and psychology from a popular science perspective, and answer the following questions:
- What kind of food did our ancestors eat?
-
Is the diet-heart hypothesis - the concept that saturated fat causes cardiovascular disease by raising serum cholesterol - true?
-
Why do we eat the way we do - how does culture influence our food choices?
-
How does nutrition sustain our health?
-
How do we study the way people use food? This is a huge issue, and I will give the participants an orientation about method.
-
Is food discussed in the media?
- Can we change our food-related behavior?
In this link, you can sign up if you are interested in participating in future lectures about nutrition psychology.
