Nutrition psychology. On the importance of eating together

Food is more abundant than ever, yet more people than ever struggle with food related issues. Another aspect concerns how we eat - alone or together. Business people eat together to increase entrainment. Cooking and eating together increase mental harmony - social happiness. Eating together seems to be a simple way to facilitate mental well-being. 3 pages.

Food is more abundant than ever, yet more people than ever struggle with food related issues. Part of the issue has to do with the food itself and beliefs about what we should eat to stay healthy. Beliefs lead to habits and sometimes convictions. The implication: even though we understand that some of the stuff we consume will harm our health, we continue to eat the stuff. For an orientation: see my previous writings on food (Österberg, 2024 a) and beliefs (Österberg, 2024 b). Another aspect concerns how we eat - alone or together.

Business people tend to have the habit of meeting over lunch or dinner. They intuitively know that eating and talking facilitates entrainment - rhythmic synchronization of behavior (Borrie, 2017Wynn and Borrie, 2022) which in turn will increase the probability that a business transaction will take place.

Another anecdote is about a very successful athlete I had the honor of cooperation with some years ago. He gave insight into family harmony. His mother worked as a cleaning lady and his father as a janitor. He also had a brother. They lived in a one-room apartment. Every evening the family gathered around the dinner table to eat together.

In a recent issue of JAMA, the concept of eating together is promoted (Brown, Kay, Thompson, 2024).

In 2020, the Kensington mums wrote:
“Food is so much more than just fuel – gathering together for a meal is a great opportunity to reconnect and share experiences with the people in our lives. But at a time when so many of us eat ‘al desko’ or whilst watching Netflix (guilty), making time to sit down to dinner with family or get together with friends even just a couple of times a week is more important than ever. And while there are many activities that can offer quality time with family and friends, sharing a meal brings its own specific benefits that other activities just can’t offer”.
In 2017, Robert Lustig and Robin Dunbar each published their take on eating together - social eating.

Lustig (2017) presented his 4C model - Connect, Contribute, Cope, and Cook together. The implication: mental harmony.

Dunbar (2017), on the other hand shows that eating and drinking together releases endorphins - the social happy hormone.

Conclusion. Eating together seems to be a simple way to facilitate mental well-being.
