Donna Adelson, a self-pronounced “domestic coordinator”, was convicted of first degree murder of her former son-in-law Dan Markel.

In July 2014, in what started with Wendi Andelson's custodial conflict against Dan Markel and their two boys, ended with murder.
Two small boys, at the time 3 to 4 four years old, lost their father because of women’s domestic violence. The boys didn’t witness the murder, but visual perception and imagery activates the same brain region (Farah, 1985; Ganis, Thompson, and Kosslyn, 2004).
The boys will probably forever suffer from Complex Childhood trauma (Malmqvist, 1986).
The backstory. Donna and Harvey Adelson have three kids, Robert, Charlie, and Wendi. On the surface, they lived a happy affluent life in southern Florida. But behind the facade, Donna behaved in a way which is described as relational aggressive (psychological dmoestic violence) (Crick and Grotpeter, 1995; Hyde, 2005).
In 1996, Donna Adelson appeared on the TV show Wheel of Fortune, where she described herself, not as a mother, but, and I quote, a “domestic coordinator”. 29 years later – in the current trial – Donna’s own children described her as an assertive micro manager.
Ten years later, Wendi married Dan Markel, later to become a professor of law. They lived what seemed like a very happy family life, but in Tallahassee in northwest Florida, ~eight hours away from the “domestic coordinator”.
Because of her mindset, Donna Adelson, wanted to be in control of Dan's and Wendi's children, to raise them her way. (This is not unusual and probably explained by evolutionary anthropology).
Therefore, she was in constant contact with Wendi, demanding her to try to influence Dan to move to south Florida. This is known as memory hacking (Shaw, 2016), or just 'brainwashing' and will probably qualify as relational aggressive (psychological dmoestic violence) (Crick and Grotpeter, 1995; Hyde, 2005).
When Dan Markel rejected that, Donna hostility increased (e-mail from the trial showed that she used very condescending language to describe Dan Markel). Based on studies on social influence (Asch, 1956; Festinger, Riecken and Schacter, 1956; Milgram, 1963; Latané, 1981; Tomasello et al. 2005), its likely to claim that Donna's hate influenced Charlie and Wendi.
Eventually, Wendi, probably under pressure from Donna, filed for divorce (2013 – 2014), and then also tried to convince the court personnel to allow her to relocate the boys closer to the “domestic coordinator”. That was denied. But Wendi's, or rather Donna's, custodial conflict didn't end there.
On July 18, 2014, when Dan Markel had parked his car in the family's garage, a hit man approached him and shot him in the head at close range. Eleven hours later, Dan Markel was pronounced dead. Two small boys had lost their father.
On April 21, 2022, eight years after the murder of Dan Markel, Donna's son and Wendi's brother Charlie, was arrested. On November 3, 2023, "Charles Adelson was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation to commit murder in the death of Florida State law professor Daniel Markel" (Planas, 2023).
Donna tried to flee the country to Vietnam, which has no extradition treaty with the US, but she was arrested at the airport. For some reason, she tried to hide her smartphone from the police!? Her husband – Harvey – was with her but was not arrested.
Yesterday, the “domestic coordinator”, now 75 years of age, was also convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation to commit murder in the death of the father of her grandchildren – Daniel Markel.
Listen to body language expert Dr. G's assessment of Donna Adelsons reaction to the sentence, and Dan Markel's parents respective statements: little sadness, a lot of anger, and a lot of performance. She tried to draw attention to herself. Donna Adelson seems to lack empathy/Theory of mind understanding that other individuals have mental states, such as knowledge, intentions, and beliefs (Premack and Woodruff, 1978):
“The concept of theory of mind is appealing to clinical psychopathologists, because theory of mind in its most sophisticated expression is unique to humans and because its absence or impaired functioning may account for quite a broad spectrum of behavioral abnormalities in both children and adults. In the following section, we therefore briefly summarize some of the empirical findings regarding theory of mind in psychopathological conditions>” (Ho, Saxe and , Cushman, 2022).Why is this case important?
Because it shines the light on a phenomena called domestic violence.
For decades, government people have used unscientific propositions to blame domestic violence on men. In Sweden, the government even recruited Eva Lundgren, a marxist sociologist from Norway, who together with a gynecologist Gun Heimer, social worker Ann-Marie Kalliokoski, and jurist Jenny Westerstrand conducted a pilot study where they excluded men (in the science community, we think that’s strange):
- Based on testimony, concluded that Domestic violence should be spelled men’s violence against women (Lundgren et al. 2001).
Lundgren was banned from teaching and supervising students about gender, power, and violence (Holm, 2011).
Note. This is very unusual, not to say unlikely.
What does studies based on sciencebshow?
Well, since the 1970s, studies conducted with a proper method, for example Conflict tactics scale (CTS) or similar, shows the following distribution:
- physical domestic violence: women account for the majority of incidents and injuries. And yes, serious injuries.
- lethal domestic violence will equally unlikely (0.000005) affect children, men or women.
- psychological domestic violence (relational aggressiveness). Typically female (Crick and Grotpeter, 1995; Hyde, 2005). For example, custodial conflicts. Women's custodial conflicts, which have a really negative impact on children's executive functions, are typically explained by a high degree of neuroticism and/or Borderline personality disorder (Jiang, Dong och Wang, 2022; Ode et al. 2009; Ruffalo, 2024; Weisberg et al. 2011; Zalewski et al. 2014).
Why is this case important for Finland?
Because, Finnish women's:
- relational aggressiveness (psychological violence in the home environment) is the big issue (Helsingfors Police department, April, 2022).
- 40% of Finnish school kids are victims of psychological violence in the home environment (Estlander, Bensow, nov 2023).
- Women’s domestic violence is the big issue (Helsingfors police department according to Amnesty Finland, February, 2024).
- a 12 year old boy was murdered by his mother. Based on Lundgren’s ideas, the social service in Finland's capital Helsingfors had isolated the boy in what is known as a “protective home” with the mother who eventually killed him (Björkqvist, HBL, 2022).
- a mother was convicted to life in prison, according to Finnish law, for murdering a father by pouring gasoline over him while he was sleeping and then setting him on fire (Svartström, HBL, 2022).
- A mother in Borgå, 50 km east of Helsingfors, tried to beat her 5-year old son to death. The social service obviously knew about her, because they called the police. The mother continued to beat the little boy even after the police broke into the apartment (Nyqvist and Kurri, 2022)
Here's a list of 103 cases of women's lethal violence.
