The killing of a father. The case for the matriarch – Donna Adelson

Developing story. Yesterday, Wendi Adelson testified in the case against her mother – Donna Adelson – who is accused of being the mastermind behind the murder of Wendi Adelson's ex-husband Dan Markel on July 19, 2014 (De Valle and Casarez, 2025).

“Adelson, 75, is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy and solicitation in the 2014 Markel murder, one of Tallahassee's most notorious cases. The crime has led to the convictions of four others, including her son, Charlie Adelson. The murder plot happened as Markel and his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, were feuding in court over custody of their two sons during a bitter divorce” (Barrera, 2025).

Wendi's brother has already been sentenced to life in prison for the murder. Now their mother is on trial.

During the testimony, Wendi admitted that her mother was controlling and that her entire family had a hostile attitude towards the father of her children. According to Wendi, her mother, before she met her husband, had set her up on dating sites. And after she divorced Dan Markel and dated someone who looked like him, her mother showed her disapproval of her choice. The relationship ended.

Wendi also testified that her mother - Donna - had used a very condescending language when she was speaking or writing mails about her then son-in-law. That included the accusation of being a narcissist.
Even Dan Markel's and Wendi's children had told the beloved father that Donna had sad bad things about their father to them.

The consequence is in the scientific literature: Two young children lost their father and suffered from complex childhood trauma (Malmquist, 1986). Of course, they did not see their father murdered, but they probably imagined the event many times. Visual perception and imagery activated the same brain region (Malmquist, 1986). Note.
